Some time in 1967 I was given a camera.  A box camera. A Kodak pin-hole model that used No:127 films roll of 12 negatives.

That first camera sparked off my life long hobby of snap shooting on life around me. The first few rows of films began in snap shots on my brothers and sisters.

During a visit to Batu Lintang in 2005, I was saddened to find No: 66 quarters has long being demolished.

I lived 6 years in this house 1966-1971. I thought I would never have a photo of this house for memory.

But I was much in joy when recently rediscovered a few long forgotten black and white negatives of this house No: 66. This negatives are from the earliest roll of films when I started learning snap shooting.


These few negatives have never been print into a hard copy. Because in those day pocket money was so limited. I could not afford to pay the photo studio to print all natives into photographs. I would select only the best for printing. For each row of 12 films developed by the photo studio, I would only select the best 10 for printing into photos.  This house was one of those left out and eventually forgotten.

But somehow these negatives manage to survive all these 44 years into today digital era.

Last month I converted all old era’s negatives into modern digital images.

For the first time I see the positive image of these snap shots I took on …. Home sweet home 44 years ago and bring it into an era of internet sharing. See above images.



My father was a life long civil servant from colonial to an independent modern nation.

We grew up in the standard one floor stilts wooden government quarters.

In the last century civil servants living government quarters were envy of the local community.

The official language was in English so all civil servants came from English schools or from Malay schools with excellent English.  It was a public opinion that only smart students could pass English examination with excellent results and eventually served as government servant. As such Government servants were considered the elite group in the society then. They were well respected. And these old timer of servants carried out their official duties with devotions and efficiency.

Common people went to the government offices with confident and respect. We called them “Sir” (later "tuan" in the later years) even he or she was only a counter clerk.

Most of the government officers communicate in English while the ground level with the public was always in Pasar Malay.

My father no doubt has his pride as a British colonial civil servant. But his pride faced 2 challenges during his later days: My mother and the New Federal Administration.

For me, I will always remember the joy of children playing kite at the grass fields near this house No: . I was among them playing kite but one of the oldest kids as I was already in junior secondary (Form 1 - 3).

Government quarters often have small padang for their children to play on. The kite fever were during 1966-1969 after which the game gradually cool down. By 1971 the year I completed Form 5, hardly seen groups of children playing anymore.

Colonial government servants' life gradually gone out and replaced by a rapid social and political progress.  Today these government housing remains a history of Sarawak. My childhood also went into historical memories.

Commercial moved into this once Land of the Government quarter.  A politicians backed private developer is now turning it into a magnificent ground of modern commercial and entertainment ground. Replacing the once pride, dignify and graceful colonial life style with a modern profit generating and entertainment seeking modern Asian way of living.

Colonial Sarawak Government history may not be a forgotten past but it will be ignored by this generation, and the next, and perhaps another generation. Until a new generation who fed out of this so call modern Asian way of materialistic living and seek up for a new life style with pride, dignify and grace.

Prayer Mountain of Haleluya Retreat Center

A retreat center with beautiful surrounding. Haleluya Retreat Center is located 2 km before the entrance to Kinabalu Park. The retreat center is situated on a valley of Kinabalu mountain range. Mount Kinabalu is a famous tourist spot and is a World Heritage Site.

The Center has been a nice place for Christian events but it also open to the public for overnight accommodation.

A good place for Family retreats, Church seminars, Youth camp, Personal prayer and meditation.  Water supply may be a problem during dry seasons because water are pump up from well and stream.

We woke up in a clear morning and saw Mount Kinabalu and the valleys very clearly. We had a morning walk along the hilly road to Kinabalu Mountain Lodge and stop a few times to get some snap shots. It was an enjoyable magnificent morning. The view of  Kinabalu mountain range is awesome.

Weather conditions can change rapidly on this mountain area. At the left of above photos is the cabbage garden and farmer's house.

At Kinabalu mountain range, the best weather in a day is early morning. 
There are two monsoons that bring rainy seasons to Sabah:
1- South West Monsoon stretches May to July. 
2- North East Monsoon October to January brining heavy and frequent rain. This is the worst time to visit Mount Kinabalu due to the heavy rain.

Rains and Vegetable

During the day, the weather is fickle, it changes quickly. Weather conditions can change rapidly on this  mountain area. A clear, sunny morning can suddenly turn into heavy sleeting rain in a matter of minutes by noon. Visitors to Mount Kinabalu Park must be well prepared for any eventuality.


February to  April are best months to visit Mount Kinabalu. These 3 months are non monsoon season with little  rainfall.
Today we are here is May when rains only starting to increase. Rain is what the vegetable farmers in Kundasang expecting all year round.  I saw the cabbage farmer harvesting his cabbages in the early morning. When I walk the slop down to talk to him, he complained of little rains of the past months resulted in his cabbages not growing big enough. But even though not big enough, the cabbages are old enough to be harvested as soon and the land to be replanted with a new batch of vegetable.

Sweet Cabbages
I bought 13Kg of cabbages directly from his farm. He said his cabbages belong to the sweet variety. (The other type of cabbages are bigger and greener but less sweet taste).

Before we left  for long journey home, he carried the heavy big beg of cabbages from the farm up the hill slop to the car park and put into my car. He charged me only Rm2.00 per kg dealer price and gave me another 4 Kg as free gift. I pay him Rm30.00 and asked him to keep the change. He was pleased and  we have sweet cabbages. 

The next day we and the neighbors have fresh sweet cabbages for dinner. 13Kg  is just enough to give 2 cabbages each neighbors. For the next several days of dinner the fried cabbages dish is the first to finish on the dinning table. We all like the fresh crispy and sweet test of the vegetable. The farmer already told me so that his cabbages are sweet.






Corypha Taliera - “extinct in the wild” tree species found in Borneo Island

If I have correctly identified this tree as Corypha taliera (Tali Tree) then this is a rear tree species found in Sabah of Borneo Island.

International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has classified this plant species Corypha taliera on its Red List, as being “extinct in the wild”.

This biggest natural stage in the world is built on the Li River, stretches for 2 kilometers in length with 12 mountain peaks as background. The large-scaled lights system and special smoke-effect system create a dreamlike world for the audiences. The sound system of the theatre is invisible-designed, and use the echo of the mountain to gain a natural stereophony effect. 
Some of the performers are the young singers from the villages of ethnic group of Dong and other ethnic minorities. They sing with natural untrained voices and dance with spontaneous style. With a real gorgeous landscape as background, these girls are extraordinary beautiful and organic.

We watched plays in the theater and used to the stage, lights, and sound equipment inside a building. But there is an alternative way of enjoying a live performance in a natural environment.
"Impression Sanjie Liu" first premiered performance was premiered on March 20th, 2004 at the Sanjie Liu Sing Fair, one mile from West Street (Xi Jie).

The name "Liu Shanjie" is meaningless to the non Chinese. To make the show title more easy reading and understanding the show is marketed as "Impressions Light Show in Yangshuo" by tour group to non Chinese. "Impressions Light Show in Yangshuo" and "Impression Liu Shanjie".

This world largest natural theater utilizes  Li River as a stage, with twelve mist shrouded hills and the heavens as backdrop. Mist, rain, moonlight, the hills and their inverted reflections on the river water all become the ever-changing natural background.

The sound equipment are installed in harmony with the natural environment. The valleys, the hills, the cool breeze and the gurgling streams are all elements contributing to the three-dimensional sound effect.

This is really a new concept opera using nature as an integral part of its performers; and the Chinese called this new concept  'Human's Masterpiece Cooperated with the God'.





More than 600 people involved in this play. Most of them are fishermen from the 5 villages along the river. In daytime, they work on the river for a living, and when night fall, these fishermen with their bamboo rafts perform before the eyes of 3,000 visitors from around the worlds. 
Folk songs and fishing nets together created an impression of singing in an antiphonal style. The red fishing nets fluttering on the river are moving melodies and the men behind the red nets are musical notes that jump with joy.


"Impression Liu Sanjie" 印象劉三姐 is the core show in this Li River Mountain-Water Theatre. The large-scale performance was invested by Guilin Guang wei Wenhua Tourism and Culture Co. Ltd, and took 5 years to completed. This performance expresses the beautiful scenery of the Li River, The colorful culture of the ethnic groups in Guangxi and the brave imagination of the artists in China. A first of its kind in the world.
This 1 hour live performance creatively combines the classical Sanjie Liu’s Mountain Songs 劉三姐山歌 (folk songs), ethnic groups’ culture and the fishing lights together to reflect the harmonious atmosphere between human beings and the nature.




No photography is allowed. But throughout the performance, flash light from camera were flashed every now and then. And I snapped a few shoots and manage to captured these few images as above.  But the performance was just too amazing not to share more images with you. So, at below,  I downloaded a few clearer images and link to a couple of video from the internet just to share with you.




"Impression on Sanjie Liu"

A film 'Sanjie Liu' produced in 1961 made the Li River famous worldwide.
Sanjie Liu is a fairy singer in the myths and legends of the Zhuang ethnic minority.
She is beautiful and has an equally beautiful voice.
In this modern stage perform we watch today the 'Impression Sanjie Liu', are some "Impressions" derived from the daily life of the people living around the Li River, rather than the specific details of the stories.
From these impressions, you will gain a realistic impression on the background of Liu Sanjie's birthplace and understand the beauty of the folk songs' hometown.


The show beginning with lights gradually turned off one after another. The image of Sanjie appears indistinctly in the sky with song
'Sing the folk songs, here I am singing and there you are echoing...'.
As the lights come up, the twelve hills appear in front of the audients; and a small fishing boat is rowed from the hills. This is the Preface - the Legend of Hills and Rivers.

The performance is divided into seven chapters including the preface and epilogue:
1st : The first chapter is the Red Impression: Folk Songs. On the water, many fishermen are rowing their bamboo rafts in a column. Some standing some squatting, they hang the large red silk in the sky and or upon the water. This red picture symbolizes the enthusiasm and praises the labors of the local people.

2nd : The second chapter is the Green Impression - Impression on Sanjie Liu : Garden. Color green symbolizes nature and vitality. Among the green hills and rivers, the smoke from cooking fires curls upward; herders are heading home with their cattle under the gleam of the sunset. The women, washing clothes beside the water are waiting for their husbands who are rowing the fishing rafts back home. This chapter tells us the peaceful and happy life of the local people.

3rd : The third chapter is the Golden Impression: Fishing Lights. Hundreds of bamboo rafts with golden fishing lights spreading all over the river. The rafts, gently rocking make the golden fishing lights dance upon the waters, the straw rain capes, the frolic cormorants and the hills construct a perfect picture describing the simple existence of the people around the Li River.

4th : The fourth chapter is the Blue Impression: Love Songs. Under the deep blue sky, and on the dark blue water, the performer of Sanjie is singing classical love songs. Then, a crescent-shaped boat with a charming fairy dancing in is flying onto the surface of the water. A group of pretty and young girls, dressed in red or white are bathing around the boat. In this blue world, these beautiful girls seem to become the notes of Sanjie's love songs.

7th : The last chapter is the Silvery Impression: Performance Grand Ceremony. As the 'Wonder of Lijiang Culture', this scenery reflects the traditional ceremony in Sanjie's hometown according to the legend. Over 200 Zhuang girls form a long column across the bridge over the Li River. Their silver dresses make the river shimmer in a mysterious manner. As the fishing rafts are rowed farther and farther from the audience the beautiful songs of Sanjie are still echoing among the hills. The girls on the bridge present their thanks for the audience with their affectionate folk songs.

This live performance boasts of modern and classical music by famous musicians of China. There are over 600 performers, all are local people of the Li River. They present the reality of life for the people in Sanjie's hometown through their primitive and wonderful performances.

劉三姐 Liu Shanjia



10:43AM On the way to see Cormorant Bird catching fish. 16 of us divided into 2 bamboo rafts and enjoy a 5 minutes short ride on the bamboo raft. But before we can see the fisherman fishing, we first "MUST" sing the local folk songs 'against ' three 'Scholars' - (Siew Chai). This part of the tour programme is designed only for Chinese who knows the story of Shanjia Liu. Non Chinese may see this is a meaningless activity.

There, at distant of the Li River, are the 3 scholars on another bamboo raft waiting to challenge us with the local folk songs.

The few eldest in my age group enjoyed singing 劉三姐 Liu Sanjie's folk songs with the three 秀才SiewChai. But the few other young one swallowed their laughers and wondering what is the matter at all to come all the way from Malaysia to yelling songs on the bamboo raft on this Guilin River. If at all singing does matter, why can't just sing a few reputable Michael Jackson's songs.

The first part of the ride was this folk song singing session with the 3 siew chai and the second part was the watching their fisherman special way of catching fish which I wrote in a separate bog.

The river we are rafting on is "遇龍河Yu-Long He," literally meaning "River of Meeting a Dragon"
The boat men (the raft men) are strong. They "drive"  the raft boat using a big long bamboo. Slowly he swing the bamboo until the end reached the river bed and pushed the raft forward. The part of the river is not deep.

遇龍河Yulong River is the biggest branch of the Li River in 陽朔YangShuo County. 陽朔YangShuo is an hour drive from 桂林Guilin City. This town is descript as Heaven on Earth by too many visitors. Google 陽朔 YangShuo and you shell know why.

The clear water runs smoothly past fields, farmhouses, trees and mountains.  And this bamboo rafting on the 遇龍河Yulong Rivers feel relaxed and happy in the serenity of the green mountains. Bamboo raft ride is an excellent relaxing way to views of the amazing Yu Long River and watch the countryside just drift on by.
Hundred of tourists come for rafting on the water in this area and there are several jetty starting points at different locations along the rivers.

The jetty point our tour bus brought us to has no name no sign board and no noisy tourists.  The tour guide said this jetty point was newly completed. From the look of  new jetty and the arrangement of singing folksongs with imitating the scene of the 1960s film "劉三姐Liu Sanjie", I guess this new jetty is located specially to cater for Malaysian tourist specially elderly Malaysia Chinese tourist. Because Liu Shanjie of the 40 years old film still remain fresh and dear to the heart of the elderly Malaysian Chinese and that "桂林Guilin" and "劉三姐Liu Shanjia" are synonym to them. Coming to Guiling means coming to the home town of Liew Sanjie.

But who is 劉三姐Liu Sanjia ? Despite I repeatedly mentioning the name of Liu Shanjia to them during the tour, my son and daughter never asked this question to me. They are not interested to know. If at all they are to meet some one in China,  Jacky Chan is the one they are expecting.
The bamboo drift is slow floating gently down the course of the rivers then back again. The ride lasted for half hour. A tranquility half hour.

The excellent composition of water, bridge and mountains along this waterway is one of the favorite choices of photographers  coming to the area. I return home with few GB of images of  Guilin - the home town of  劉三姐 Liu Shanjie.

The music of Chorus Voice



1970s is a decade I were in secondary school.  During this period there were several light music of my favorite from the radios. These favorite music has a unique style that is a chorus sing with voice and not with words.  Chorus of voices is beautiful and sentimental then chorus of words. The radio DJ called these music Light Music while the musical world classified these as Easy Listening.

But I never know who the composer and singers until few decades later when the Internet make it possible for each individual to search for information. With Google, now I realized more then half of those music during my school days came from an American Ray Conniff. 

I grew up in the music of Ray Conniff.

Ray Conniff (雷· 康尼夫)(November 6, 1916 – October 12, 2002)
Joseph Raymond "Ray" Conniff /Jay Raye" was an American bandleader and arranger best known for his Ray Conniff Singers during the 1960s.


Ray composed many Light Music popular in the West and in Asia. Kuching being a successful British colonized town for century in history  and has a large English speaking generation naturally picked up the popular culture of the west. Ray Conniff's light music has its share of popularity in this part of the world.


Ray Conniff's presentation style is the using of human voice as the main part of the musical band, welded with saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and other brass instruments. This organic composition created a thick, rich, impressive sound effects.

During his life long career in composing music with wordless chorus, his music can be categorized into 3 groups :

1) ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS
2) CHORUS SINGERS
3) THEMES OF STAGE AND SCREEN

"A Sing Sing So " is an Indonesian folk song that for decades echoed among songs of Batak people, from classic to pop and now the melody echoed in many Chinese songs and music.
What magic "A Sing Sing So" has in capturing the hearts of the Batak peoples and the Chinese people?  Its a song with a melody  from the dept of one heart  to dept of another hearts.




Gordon Tobing
(1925-1993) is an legendary musician and singer of Indonesian. He popularized the song "Sing Sing So" and many other Batak folk song in Indonesia and overseas.

Gordon Tobing once said: "I can sing many folk songs from many countries, only Arabic song from Nigeria that I can not sing".  

Wednesday 13th of 1993 this great musician and singer RIP went RIP dramatically without leaving any message. The night before, Tuesday, he was still watching his favorite show from the TV . Suddenly he complained to his wife of chest pain. With that, Gordon breathed his last breath in the arms of his beloved wife Theresia Hutabarat.

Gordon Tobing during his life time servicing as an people-ambassador introducing Indonesian folk songs to the rest of the world. He established a close tie with the local Indonesian Chinese folk songs lovers. They sing together. They sang "Sing Sing So" and "BUTET" and several others. 

In 1953 and 1953 Gordon Tobing together with local Indonesian Chinese Zhou Caiying 周彩英 presented "BUTET" in the World Youth Festival and received great applaud from youth around the world. 
In 1959 and 1960 Indonesia-China friendship cultural delegation visit to China, Zhou Caiying 周彩英 also solo of this "BUTET" folk.

Era has changed, but the  few Batak songs populated by Gordon to the Chinese are never forgotten.
In 2010, thousand of Asian athletics gathered in China for the 16th Asian Games. After the week long of competition, all gathered for the last time in closing ceremony. And in the mood of farewell, is the echo from stage performers the lyrics, melody and rhythm of this melancholic song "Sing Sing So". (see video above)

Pulau Bali《巴厘島》

That night a queen sang for me. 

It was in 2009 at the Multi purposes Hall Calvary Church of Tawau Town in Malaysia. She said to all the audiences "I sing for all of you". She went on to sing several Mandarin oldies of the 1950 and 1960 including Bengawan Solo and Bali Island. She is non other then the 低音歌后潘秀瓊 the queen of bass singers.


Pan Xiuqiong has outstanding bass voice (low voice). She became popular in among the Oversea Chinese at the age of 18 in the 1950s with her hit 《情人的眼泪》"lover's tears"At a young age she sign contact with EMI company of Hong Kong to produce two records per year. That was 50 years ago. Today she is still singing. She sang behind movie films a few times. In the 1950-1960 She was one the 5 Singing Queens of the Chinese. (Other 4: 顧媚Gu Mei, 崔萍CUI Ping, 靜婷Jing Ting, 潘迪華Rebecca Pan)

Being spending her childhood in Malaysia and Singapore, Pan XiuQiong grew up closely with the musical influence of  Indonesia. And when she went on stage to charm her audiences with her magnetic low tone, she introduced the Kronchong  music to her song lovers.  She was the first Chinese to popularized two Indonesian songs as early as in the 1950. After her,  several well know  singers contributed there version and singing style of the two well know Indonesian songs. The Kronchong songs are Pulau Bali and Bengawan Solo.


《巴厘島》Pulau Bali (Bali Island) was a household favorite in Chinese society. Since Pan Xiuqiong first recorded the song in 1957 in Hong Kong, many singers in Hong Kong and Taiwan follow to contributed their own versions of the song.

"Forget Me Not"

 This is a 120 page Chinese biography of Pan Xiuqiong "Forget Me Not". In her book about her life are collection of photographs of many singers.  Her biography gave the fans a more comprehensive knowledge of her singer career.


Pan Xiuqiong was born in Macau, moved to Malaysia as a child, later moved to Singapore to record her albums. From Singapore she was head-hunted by EMI Hong Kong to stay in  Hong Kong for 10 years. Back to Singapore she was singing instructor in TV programmes and program of production.


In the book she thanked her mentor Yao Min 姚敏  for encouraging her in musical creation. And mentioned how Yao Li 姚莉 gave her spiritual support after her divorce. And how Yao Li cared by her sick bedside when she was sick. There are several little known stories about her friendship with Teresa Then 鄧麗君. With out this book we would not know more about this Song Queen's 50 years of career in the Chinese musical world.

"Any one came from Indonesia ?" Pan Xiuqiong, standing on the stage, browsed among the 1000 over Chinese audient and asked.

No Chinese in Tawau Town wants to be known of being migrated from Indonesia, at least not in front the public in an occasion like this.  It was a bitter past in Indonesia that they tried to forget. After a short silent, a church group leader among the audient talked out loud to Pan "Yes, we have many came from Indonesia"

Pan Xiuqiong looked pleased and continued to say:
"Indonesia has a beautiful river, Solo River. Tonight I am going to sing for you 梭羅河之戀 (Romance over the Solo River)".

With her deep and low female voice she sang to us "梭羅河之戀 " The Mandarin Chinese version of "Bengawan Solo".


梭羅河之戀  made her well-known as  a hit in 1960-1970 in Malaysia. I was a student then and Pan was about 10 years my senior. We were of the same age group of the last century. Tonight (2009) she appear personally in front of us on the stage, and recaptures the hearts of many elderly who once grew up under the melody of her song first broadcast over the radios in the 1960s. Today at age of 70 over, her low vocal is as magnetic as in 1960s.  We called her the “Queen of Alto”低音歌后潘秀瓊.

Pan Xiuqiong 潘秀瓊 Poon Sow Keng 

Pan Xiuqiong was born in Macau and grew up in Malaysia and Singapore. At 8 Year-old she was the second in a children's singing competition. At twelve-year-old she went on stage and at the age of eighteen, she became a singer.

Her peak period was between 1957 to 1967. Her best songs were launched during that period.Pan's voice is low and often give listeners an unexpected turn in the song. This is her most prominent feature. 

At that time in the 1950s and 1960s, EMI has very few South East Asian singer like Pan. Pan's selections on songs with tropical Southeast Asia flavor it is a great wonderful contribution to her song lovers.

Bengawan Solo was one of the favorite tropical Asian team in those decades. Many Malaysian came to know about a beatiful Bali Island through Pan's song 峇厘島 (Bali) .
Pan XiuQiong  is known among Malaysian Chinese as the “Queen of Alto”低音歌后潘秀瓊. She popularized two Indonesian songs :
1) 峇厘島 (Bali)
2) 梭羅河之戀 (Bengawan Solo).


In 2009 she gave a concert in the hall of Calvary Church in Tawau Town. I was among the thousand audian that night.

Gesang Martohartono was born in Surakarta, Central Java, October 1, 1917 and RIP in the same town May 20, 2010 at the age of 92 years.

Gesang was a Keroncong singer and songwriter from Indonesia. Known as the "Maestro Keroncong Indonesia" (Master of Indonesian Keroncong Music). Self-made musician, yet in the decades following, his "Bengawan Solo" became internationally well-known. However he was less known except among the Indonesian and old generation of Japanese.

Gesang's name as a boy was Sutadi. The young and weak Sutadi was often sick at home while his brother Mas Yaid was fond of outdoor sports like football. After a serious fever that almost took his life, the father, Martodihardjo, decided to replaced his old name Sutadi with a new name Gesang.  In  Java language, "Gesang" mean "Long Life". His father made a right choice of this new appropriate name for him.

Gesang lived a healthy life to the extend that he made his last recording "Bengawan Solo" at the age of 85 in year 2002. Making him one of the oldest recording singers in Asia. Gesang went on to leave for another 8 years to Rest-In-Peace in 2010 at the age of 92.

"Bengawan Solo" was composed in 1940, when he was 23 years old. The then young Gesang often sit beside the bank of the Solo River. Amazed and inspired by the river, 6 months later he completed a lyric with a Keroncong tunes which he himself at that time was not aware that in decades to come this tune would echo the world over with more then 10 languages.

Gesang father's batik fabric factory went bankrupt after Gesang finished elementary school.  In difficulties he grew up and became a lifelong singer of "Kerongcong"  music originating from Portuguese songs.

Could not read and write musical notation, the young man composed "Bengawan Solo" in his mind and play out the melody on a bamboo flute. At first he sang  the song at local wedding parties and social functions. One day a local radio station asked him to broadcast his song, this mark the beginning of "Bengawan Solo" nationwide popularity.


This Indonesian song 'Bengawan Solo' lyric has been translated into more then 10 languages ​​(including English, Chinese, and Japanese).  This is the story the song trying to tell :
"Bengawan Solo, this is a song of your history. People have been fascinated with this great river since ancient times, Around the source of the Solo River, there are a thousand mountains, and the river flows all the way to the sea. There are always many merchants on board ships going up and down the river. These ships also show your history."

While the lyric has been translated from the orignal Indonesian to more than 10 languages, the melody of Bengawan Solo by now has been disfused in hundreds of musical team around the world. 

Indonesian classic kroncong composer Gesang Martohartono lived at Village Road Bedoyo Kemlayan, Serengan, Solo City with nephew and his family, having previously lived in Surakarta in 1984 for 20 years. He has split with his wife in 1962 choosing to live alone. He did not have children.

Statue of Gesang Martohartono

In the city of Solo, Gesang Martohartono's bronze status looks over the gently flowing Bengawan Solo (Solo River).

This is the statue of the famous Indonesian singer-songwriter Gesang, composed the celebrated Indonesian melody "Bengawan Solo" during World War II -- when the country was under Japanese occupation.



In Tokyo, Nobuo Ikegami, age 90 by now, recalls the tune. "This song always set my mind at ease. I memorized the melody as local residents crooned the tune so often."
Ikegami serves as vice president of the "Japan Gesang Fund Association" which promoted the erection of  a statue for Gesang.

Together with other Japanese veterans the  "Japan Gesang Fund Association" erected Gesang' s statue in October 1991 as a token of their appreciation.

After that 2009 evening with Pan's Chinese version Bengawan Solo, I began to Google for detail of the source of this melody.

Most Chinese lover of Bengawan Lovers like me  thought the song must be an  old Indonesian Folk song. Result from Google gave to my surprise, the song writer Gesang Martohartomo is very much alive and still singing. A melody that I love so much in the 1970s,  where as only until 2009 (30 years later) that  I learned of it original composer still living and singing  at his home town beside the Solo River yet unknown to the Chinese. The Chinese Bengawan Solo lovers owe much to the credibility of Gesang. (Thanks to Internet and Google)





In 1940 the young, destitute and untrained  singer Geseng  composed this  song on a bamboo flute and began to sing it at local functions and gatherings in his hometown of Surakarta.

In 1942, Japanese troops entered Indonesia,  Bengawan Solo captured their hearts.

In 1945 Second World War ended. The Japanese, who occupied Indonesia during World War II, brought the song with them to Japan after returning from the war. Back in Japan  the lyrics translated to Japanese and gained great popularity after various singers such as Toshi Matsuda released recorded versions of it which became best-sellers. The song has become almost synonymous with the perception of Indonesian music in Japan.
In 1991, a group of appreciative Japanese war veterans of "Japan Gesang Fund Association" arranged for a statue of Martohartono to be erected in a park in Surakarta.

INSIDE A DETAINMENT CAMP - where bitter memories difficult to forget


In 1999 ?,  a  Dutch author Rudy Kausbroek, 70, was giving a lecture at Waseda University, Japan on his bitter experience at the Si Rengo Rengo camp, Indonesia during World War 2.
After Rudy Kausbroek finished his lecture,  an elderly Japanese man approached him:

"I was your camp commander...If you have a grudge against the Japanese, hit me in the face first." The Japanese old man said to him in Indonesian language.

That Japanese old man is non other then Ikegami the former commander of  the detainment camp for Dutch civilians in the remote village of Si Rengo Rengo in Indonesia. The one who responsible for the bitter experience of Rudy Kausbroek 50 over years ago. The packed audience in the University hall froze in silence.

"No," Kausbroek, the author, quietly replied in Indonesian. 
"Really?" Ikegami, the former commander asked in Indonesian
"No. He did not do any evil deeds toward us." Kausbroek turned to the audience and told them. 


This historic encounter took place in Tokyo Sept. 11, 1999 ?. Ikegami and Kausbroek met for the first time in 53 years after the War ended.
Kausbroke was visiting Tokyo to mark his book' s publication in Japanese and lecture in a University hall where this  former prisoner-of-war was met by his prison-commander.

It was in the final days of the war.
Kausbroek, who was born and grew up in Sumatra, was detained at the camp for about three years as a teenager along with his Dutch father.
Ikegami was a Japanese university student-turned-officer and served as commander of a detainment camp for Dutch civilians in the remote village of Si Rengo Rengo in Sumatra.
After the conflict ended, Ikegami  was detained as a war crime suspect because of his position as camp commander but was eventually released thanks to a witness, the late Dutch journalist Albert Besnard.

Ikegami told Kyodo News :
"I never expected to meet a former Dutch detainee more than half a century after the war.
"When I was appointed camp commander, I was prepared to give up my life at any time. Regrettably, scores of detainees died at the camp while I was the commander."
